Guterres: we never recognize the “Houthis” as a representative for legitimacy in Yemen

ِAntonio Guterres, Secretary-General of the United Nations, explained the position from the Government of the Houthi rebels after signing a memorandum with its representatives in Sanaa days ago.

Guterres said that “the signing of a memorandum with representatives of the Houthis by the humanitarian coordinator of the UN, does not mean the recognition of the Houthis as legitimate representatives in Yemen .” Stressing that there is one government in Yemen which is led by the presidency of president Abdu rabbo Mansour Hadi .

“We recognize one government in Yemen, and as we do in other parts of the world for humanitarian action, we have to deal with the actual authorities on the ground,” Guterres told a news conference.

The Secretary-General noted that this was “the reason for the signing of the initiative, and it does not mean at all to recognize a Government of the Houthis.

“I call on all parties to implement the agreement with a strong commitment to protect civilians, ensure humanitarian access, comply with international humanitarian law and act urgently to achieve greater progress on the Geneva process, particularly the support of my Special Envoy to form the Constitutional Commission.” He added.

The deal signed by the Huthis and the United Nations Coordinator in Yemen allows for transferring critical patients out of Yemen for treatment through scheduled United Nations flights.
